Every Step You Should Take To Clean Monstera Leaves

How to clean your monstera plant:

  1. Inspect the Leaves: Take your time to examine each leaf carefully. Look for any signs of dust buildup, dirt, or pests. Inspecting both sides of the leaves and along the veins ensures you don’t miss any spots.
  2. Prepare Cleaning Solution: Fill a clean spray bottle with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild liquid soap or dish detergent. Avoid using too much soap, as it can leave a residue on the leaves. Alternatively, you can use a gentle plant-based cleaner specifically formulated for foliage.
  3. Dampen a Cloth: Choose a soft, lint-free cloth or sponge for cleaning. Moisten it with the cleaning solution until it’s slightly damp but not dripping wet. Excess water can lead to over-saturation of the leaves, which may promote fungal growth.
  4. Wipe the Leaves: Starting from the base of each leaf and working towards the tip, gently wipe away any dust or dirt with the damp cloth. Use light pressure to avoid damaging the delicate foliage. Take care around any new growth or tender leaves, as they are more susceptible to damage.
  5. Focus on Leaf Undersides: Don’t forget to clean the undersides of the leaves, where dust tends to accumulate. Lift each leaf carefully and wipe both sides thoroughly. This step is crucial for preventing pests and diseases that may hide in hard-to-reach areas.
  6. Rinse with Water: After cleaning, use a spray bottle filled with plain water to rinse off any soap residue. Alternatively, you can gently rinse the leaves under a faucet with lukewarm water. Ensure thorough rinsing to prevent soap buildup, which can attract dust and inhibit photosynthesis. You can also put it in the tub and rinse if it will fit- my biggest monstera (see pics below) won’t fit and a spray bottle works perfectly find too so don’t worry either way.
  7. Dry the Leaves: Allow the leaves to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated area. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as excessive heat can cause the leaves to wilt or scorch. Patience is key here; let the leaves dry completely before returning the plant to its usual spot.
  8. Polish the Leaves (Optional): If you prefer a glossy finish, you can polish the leaves with a clean, dry cloth or use a leaf shine product specifically designed for houseplants. However, keep in mind that frequent use of leaf shine products can clog the plant’s stomata and hinder respiration, so use them sparingly.
  9. Repeat Regularly: Incorporate leaf cleaning into your regular plant care routine. Aim to clean your Monstera leaves every 1-2 weeks to maintain optimal leaf health and appearance. Regular cleaning not only keeps your plant looking its best but also promotes better air circulation and photosynthesis.

By following these detailed steps, you can ensure that your Monstera plant stays clean, healthy, and vibrant all year round!
