The 6 Likely Reasons Your ZZ Plant Isn’t Growing

If you’re anything like me, you’ve fallen in love with the ZZ plant – its shiny, dark green leaves and hardy nature make it a favorite for both seasoned plant enthusiasts and beginners alike. But what happens when your ZZ plant stops growing and just seems to be sitting there, mocking your plant parenting skills? Trust me, I’ve been there, and it’s incredibly frustrating. After doing some digging (pun intended), I discovered six likely reasons why your ZZ plant might not be thriving.

First off, let’s talk about light. I used to think that ZZ plants were like vampires and could survive in complete darkness. Spoiler alert: they can’t. While they are incredibly tolerant of low light conditions, they still need some indirect sunlight to grow. If your ZZ plant is stuck in a dimly lit room, it might be time to move it to a brighter spot. Overwatering is another common issue. These plants are drought-tolerant and prefer their soil on the dry side. I learned this the hard way when I drowned my first ZZ plant in love – and water.

Then there’s the soil. If your ZZ plant feels like it’s sitting in a swamp, it’s not going to be happy. Good drainage is key, so a succulent or cactus mix might be the way to go. And let’s not forget about temperature – these guys prefer a stable environment. Too hot, too cold, or too drafty, and your ZZ plant might go on strike. Add to that potential nutrient deficiencies and pest problems, and you’ve got a few solid reasons why your plant isn’t growing. But don’t worry, with a little TLC, your ZZ plant can bounce back and become the lush green beauty you’ve always dreamed of.

The 6 Likely Reasons Your ZZ Plant Isn’t Growing

Why isn’t my ZZ plant growing?

Reason 1: Lack of Light

    • ZZ plants are pretty low-maintenance when it comes to light, but they still need some to thrive. If your plant is tucked away in a dark corner, it might be sulking and refusing to grow. Try moving it to a spot with bright, indirect light and watch it perk up.
    • They are not overly susceptible to damage from too much light so don’t be nervous about crisping your plants.

    Reason 2: Overwatering

      • ZZ plants are like that friend who only drinks water occasionally. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which will definitely put a damper on growth. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings and make sure your pot has good drainage.
      • Unfortunately ZZ plants are not immune or all that hearty against root rot (aka my worst nightmare). But even before root rot takes over from overwatering the general act can stunt its growth so be cautious when watering. Chances are you are more likely to be over rather than underwatering ZZ plants!

      Reason 3: Poor Soil Quality

        • If your ZZ plant is planted in soil that doesn’t drain well, it might feel like it’s stuck in a swamp. Using a well-draining potting mix designed for succulents can help provide the right conditions for your plant to flourish.
        • If you suspect that the soil isn’t draining well then go ahead and re pot your beautiful plant to help your ZZ grow. Also, while you are at it make sure to put your zz in a pot that is well draining. Terracotta pots are my favorite to grow ZZ’s in!

        Reason 4: Temperature Extremes

          • ZZ plants prefer a stable environment. If they’re exposed to extreme temperatures or drafts, they might decide to go on a growth strike. Keep them in a room where the temperature stays between 65-75°F (18-24°C) and away from heaters or air conditioners.
          • Also, keep your ZZ away from air vents. The extreme tempature changes and blowing air can stress out a zz plant and a stressed out plant will not grow as much or even at all.

          Reason 5: Nutrient Deficiency

            • Even though ZZ plants aren’t heavy feeders, they still appreciate a little snack now and then. If your plant hasn’t been fertilized in a while, it might be missing out on essential nutrients. A balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer once or twice a year can work wonders.
            • But as much as it’s easy to assume that your ZZ is lacking nutrients and then over fertilize that can actually have the reverse results. Too much fertilization can basically drown your ZZ plant and stunt its growth so don’t try fertilizing more than twice a year.

            Reason 6: Pest Problems

              • Occasionally, ZZ plants can fall victim to pests like spider mites or aphids. These tiny invaders can sap the plant’s energy and stunt its growth. Regularly check the leaves for any signs of pests and treat them with insecticidal soap if necessary.
              • Don’t fret if you spot a pest but check throughly because they can be sneaky. They can be taken care of but you don’t want to miss them because a lot of pest damage can really stunt (and fully stop) your ZZ plant from growing as tall and beautiful as we both would love for it.

And to wrap it up let’s appreciate the beautiful new growth on my ZZ plant and my evidence that being cautious about the reasons above you can grow a tall, healthy and beautiful ZZ plant:
