6 Plants To Grow In Your Apartment: Small but Mighty

Apartment living doesn’t have to hold you back from your personal jungle dreams! There are so many gorgeous house plants out there that are both small (or can be regularly pruned to keep the size down) and are still stunning and fulfill that love of plants.

This is a mission and an article that is super personal to me- this year my husband and I downsized from a 3500 sq ft house in the suburbs to a 1300 sq ft apartment in the city. And while the act of moving was a little challenging (only lost a couple plants in the end!) it hasn’t held back my house plant love at all.

So I wanted to share the plants that transitioned and fit the best into apartments because we all deserve a little greenery in our spaces!

Let’s get into it-

6 Plants To Grow In Your Apartment: Small but Mighty

6 Plants To Grow In Your Apartment: Small but Mighty

My favorite little and easy houseplants for apartment living:

Apartment Plant 1: Pothos

The ultimate low-maintenance plant, pothos thrives in almost any light condition and can handle a little neglect when it comes to watering. They are great for apartments because even if you don’t have amazing light or your light is blocked by other windows they can still thrive!

Pothos can get really “leggy” (aka the vines will trail off and get not so full) so don’t be afraid to prune them and keep them at a reasonable length.

I have SO many articles about pothos because they are not only a favorite of mine but basically everyone I have forced a propagation onto as well!

A few of the articles for reading after you get your pothos:

Apartment Plant 2: Philodendron

The fan favorite- philodendrons!

They are easy, they are adaptable and they are perfect for apartments. Philodendrons don’t trail off quite as rapidly as pothos so if you are looking for a leafy house plant with a little less pruning for the small space then this is the one for you!

They are not overly dramatic about lighting, chill about water schedule and don’t grow out of control!

Apartment Plant 3: Spider Plant

Not only is the spider plant easy to care for, but it also helps purify indoor air, making it a great addition to not-so-circulated apartments!

I also love the little babies that spider plants produce- they are not only adorable but also super fun because they are easy to propagate. You could have as many spider plants as you want or give them away to friends!

Cutting off the little ends when they appear is the best way to keep your spider plant under control But in general a spider plant will just grow to the size around it. I haven’t had to prune the plant above in about 2 years!

Apartment Plant 4: Zig Zag Cactus / Fishbone Cactus

A statement plant if there ever was one.

Fishbone (or commonly called zig zag) cactus plants are so freaking cool. They also however don’t grow super tall like many of their related plants. They also actually love humidity (most cacti don’t!) so the realistic and comfortable air and temperature in an apartment is no problem for them.

They do however like brighter light than most of the other plants we are discussing so put them next to a window so they thrive.

Apartment Plant 5: Snake Plant

To properly explain how easy snake plants are to care for I have to share a quick story-

My husband for some reason decided to bring a snake plant into his old office building. His office had one small window and terrible air circulation. I was CONVINCED that this was going to be it, this plant was a goner. Plus he is not the greatest at remembering anything outside of random facts lol so my faith in it getting watered was minimal.

Anyway, as you can probably guess the plant survived and it is still (6 years later!) in his home office and thriving. So moral of the story- if my sweet but spacey husband can keep this plant alive then so can you I promise!

Apartment Plant 6: Rubber Plant

Rubber plants (btw they are alive/real plants just a fun name due to their almost fake looking leaves) can THRIVE in specific tropical environments and can grow tall and gorgeous. However, inside any apartment (or house) they are limited and become a perfect apartment sized plant that is fun, hearty, and will vibe along with your lifestyle.

I hope this article helped give you some fun ideas and insight into the plant or plants you want to add to your apartment!
